ORACLE BONE SCRIPT - 甲骨文字

 

Usage Period and Origins

• Establishment Period: Around 1300 BCE (particularly developed during the reign of King Wu Ding of the Yin Dynasty)
• Oldest Example: While the prototype of writing may have existed before that, the most archaeologically certain example of oracle bone script dates back to around 1300 BCE.
• Excavation Site: Yinxu, Anyang City, Henan Province, China (the capital site of the late Yin Dynasty)

Characteristics and Uses

• Uses:
• Used for divination (oracle consultation) by the king
• Carved onto oracle bones, then heated with fire, and the shape of the resulting cracks was used to determine omens (auspicious or inauspicious outcomes)
• Materials:
• Ox scapulae and turtle shells
• Characteristics of the Script:
• Many pictographic characters that became the prototype of modern Chinese characters
• Also includes simplified, symbol-like characters

• 甲骨に刻んだ後、火で熱し、できた亀裂の形から吉凶を判断
• 素材:
• 牛の肩甲骨や亀の甲羅
• 文字の特徴:
• 現在の漢字の原型となる象形文字が多い
• 簡略化された記号のような文字も含まれる
